Meet Steven Wiederman!

Senior Lecturer / ARC DECRA, The University of Adelaide

Biography

Dr Wiederman is an interdisciplinary scientist and engineer working across fields of sensory neuroscience, computational neuroscience and neuromorphic engineering. He received a Bachelor of Medical Science and Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems) at the University of Technology, Sydney in 2005. He was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Education in 2007 and a PhD (Neuroscience) in 2009. Dr Wiederman is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Visual Physiology & Neurobotics Laboratory (VPNL) in the School of Medicine, The University of Adelaide. He holds an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award and is an Associate Investigator of the ARC Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics. In the VPNL lab, we record from neurons in the invertebrate brain that underlie optic flow analysis; feature discrimination in background clutter; and competitive selection within multiple feature environments (selective attention). We develop bio-inspired models of neuronal processing and translate these models into hardware for applications in robotics and neural prosthetics.
